Year 6

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A warm welcome to Y6. We know how exciting and also nerve-racking the last year in Primary School can be for both you and your child, so we want to support you in every way we can.

Thanks so much,

Our Year 6 teachers are Mrs Angel and Miss Mullen.

Our teaching assistants is Mrs Harrison.

Newsletters

Please find below our Curriculum Newsletters which explain what the children will be learning each term:

Year 6 Spring Newsletter 2025

Physical Education

Year 6 will have PE on a Tuesday and a Thursday during the Autumn Term. Children are required to wear their PE kit to school on the above days.

Our P.E. kit is a plain white top, black/navy shorts or trousers, black/navy jumper and trainers. Often, our P.E. lessons will take place outside so make sure you bring appropriate clothing!

Homework

Homework will consist of weekly spellings to revise at home, daily reading and key maths skills practise, especially Times Tables.

Spelling

In Year 5/6, children are expected to be able to spell certain words. Please ensure that you familiarise yourself with these words and carry out your weekly homework.

Reading

We can’t emphasis enough how important it is to read; you can unlock a whole world of imagination just by opening a book. We really promote reading for pleasure: we use a class rewards system to encourage and promote this even further. Whatever the genre, whether it’s non-fiction or fiction, comics, newspapers, adventure, science fiction – the list is endless – we love to know when you’re really enjoying a certain author or text and we ensure that our curriculum reflects the wealth of different texts, too.

And that’s us over and out on Newby Wiske 2026! (Mr Joyeux was nowhere to be found - we suspect he was in a corner somewhere, concocting similes for his Facebook updates!)

Thank you to the children for a lovely few days away. Enjoy a good night’s rest in your own beds!
