Art at St. Edward’s

Our curriculum intent for Art and Design at St. Edward’s Primary is to:

  • To enable children to record from first-hand experience and from their imagination, and to select their own ideas to use in their work;
  • To ensure that each child develops appropriate skills and techniques through active and purposeful experiences using a variety of art materials and teaching strategies;
  • To increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art and design in different times and cultures;
  • To foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers;
  • To encourage each child to evaluate their art and design work and that of others both with peers and adults.

At St Edward’s Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas.

Across the key stages, we use a range of teaching and learning styles to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in Art. We provide a range of learning experiences for our pupils through class visits and out of school learning is important to our staff, ensuring that children’s learning is stimulating, real and relevant. The local area is also fully utilised to achieve the desired outcomes, with extensive opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice. Within our knowledge-rich approach, there is a strong emphasis on people and the community of our local area.

The work of famous local, national and international artists are explored to enhance the children’s learning.

The children’s learning is further enhanced with a whole school arts week in the summer term where the children have the opportunity for collaborative working and exploring the different styles and techniques of a range of artists.

We currently hold the Silver Award status for Arts Mark

And that’s us over and out on Newby Wiske 2026! (Mr Joyeux was nowhere to be found - we suspect he was in a corner somewhere, concocting similes for his Facebook updates!)

Thank you to the children for a lovely few days away. Enjoy a good night’s rest in your own beds!
